Their passionate encounter happened long ago by whatever measurement Claire Randall took. Two decades before, she had traveled back in time and into the arms of a gallant eighteenth-century Scot named Jamie Fraser. Then she returned to her own century to bear his child, believing him dead in the tragic battle of Culloden. Yet his memory has never lessened its hold on her… and her body still cries out for him in her dreams. Then Claire discovers that Jamie survived. Torn between returning to him and staying with their daughter in her own era, Claire must choose her destiny. And as time and space come full circle, she must find the courage to face the passion and pain awaiting her…the deadly intrigues raging in a divided Scotland… and the daring voyage into the dark unknown that can reunite or forever doom her timeless love.
So first I have to say, I did not read the first 2 books. I watched the the first 2 seasons of the show Outlander on Starz and immediately feel in love with the characters and the story. So as soon as I finished watching season 2, I immediately started reading the 3rd book, Voyager. I do plan on reading the first 2 books, but now I just want to continue reading the series! Anyway, so this book starts off alternating between Jamie in the past and Claire in the future. We learn a lot about what has happened for both of the characters during the 20 years since Claire came back through the stones during the battle of Culloden. We learn that obviously Jaime survived Culloden, but then went through so many years of misery involving living in a cave alone and then prison. Claire decided to complete medical school to become a doctor, but as in a love less marriage with Frank, never being able to move forward after her time with Jamie. She gives birth to his daughter, Brianna and when we meet her in this book she is around the age of 20. Long story short, after Frank passes away, Brianna and Claire head to Scotland for a visit and soon Brianna learns the truth about Claire and her father and they start searching to see if they can figure out whether Jaime is still alive.
I loved everything about this book and there really isn’t anything I would change. I never started this series because every book is almost 900 pages and there are 7-8 books in the series, so that intimidated me a bit. I love the author’s writing, I love all of the characters and I love the story and the varieties of settings that Voyager takes place in. It was interesting to watch Claire and Jamie get to know each other again after 20 years apart and I just really love both of them, both as individual characters and together. And this book was just full of adventure and often plans gone very wrong. Claire and Jamie together seem to always run into trouble, no matter where they are or what they are doing. I cannot praise this book enough, I absolutely loved it and I wouldn’t change a thing. I do wish I had read the first 2 books instead of watching the TV show first, but like I said I plan to read them at some point. This whole story is just so creative and magical, it instantly became one of my all time favorites and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series. The combination of historical fiction, fantasy, adventure and romance is just perfect. If you haven’t read this series, I highly recommend it.
