This book is based around the main character of Simon Snow, who is finishing his last year at the Watford School of Magicks. Simon seems to have a lot going on; his girlfriend has broken up with him, his roommate/nemesis is missing and he is having problems with his mentor. He keeps trying to relax but there is too much going on around him.
This is the first book I have read by Rainbow Rowell, although I have a heard a lot of hype about this book and “Fangirl”. To be honest, this book reminded me a lot of Harry Potter, from the first chapter. Rowell is describing Simon getting ready to head back to school and he’s waiting in a train station. Later on in the book it reminds me less of Harry Potter, as it takes on it’s own story with its own characters. Obviously this is a book about magic, but it is also about love and friendship. The plot was quite fast paced, which I personally enjoy and I felt that the characters were very well developed and I enjoyed the author’s writing style. Overall, it was an enjoyable fantasy book and it had a different perspective, once you get past the first few chapters, then many other fantasy books I have previously read. In the future, I don’t think I will probably read anything by this author, it just isn’t my style. However, I can think of about 10 people I know who would adore this book. It is well written and a good story, just not for me. I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
